about the book

chromatopia inspiration

The co-author and illustrator of this book is by Joon Alvarado, who is red-green color blind. The idea for this book was inspired by his own experience growing up without resources or guidance after his color blind diagnosis.

After being told he was color blind by the school nurse, Joon remembers avoiding crayons unless they were clearly labeled, worried he might choose the wrong color. He questioned his abilities, feeling that if something as fundamental as color was challenging, more complex subjects like math or grammar would be even more difficult.

This book was made to ensure no child ever felt that way again. It is for those who may feel uncertain or lack confidence when it comes to color, this was created to provide encouragement, inspiration and is a reminder that there is no limit to your imagination. You can still see and create something beautiful, bright, colorful and entirely your own.
